From restricting first-class awards to elite members to raising carrier-imposed surcharges, Emirates Skywards has gone through some major changes recently. But the biggest blow has come from its transfer partners.
Over the past year, nearly every major flexible points program has either broken up with Emirates or made the relationship significantly more expensive. Chase dropped Emirates as a transfer partner entirely, while American Express, Capital One, and Citi all devalued their transfer ratios.
The result is simple. Emirates awards now require way more points than they used to.
But there’s one notable exception.

The problem with most Emirates transfer partners
For years, we could move points from almost any major program to Emirates at a clean 1:1 ratio. One credit card point equaled one Skywards mile.
Then, the transfer tax era began.
American Express and Citi both devalued their transfers to a 5:4 ratio, meaning 1,000 points now only get you 800 Skywards miles. Chase went even further and removed Emirates as a transfer partner altogether.
Capital One is the latest to follow suit. As of January 13, 2026, its transfer ratio dropped to 2:1.5, or 4:3.
How the major programs stack up

Those differences may not look huge at first, but they become very real once you price out an actual flight.

A real example that shows the gap
Take one of Emirates’ most popular sweet spots: business class between the U.S. and Europe on fifth freedom routes like JFK to Milan or Newark to Athens.
Emirates typically charges 87,000 Skywards miles one-way for these routes.
Here’s how many points you would need to book that same ticket through each program:
Bilt Rewards: 87,000 points
Amex Membership Rewards: about 109,000 points
Citi ThankYou Rewards: about 109,000 points
Capital One Miles: about 116,000 miles
Chase Ultimate Rewards: Not possible
That’s a difference of 20,000 to nearly 30,000 points for the same exact flight.

What about booking Emirates through other airlines?
You can technically still book some Emirates flights through partners like Air Canada Aeroplan or Qantas Frequent Flyer, both of which are 1:1 transfer partners of programs like Amex.
Sometimes those options are useful, but they generally have access to less award space than Emirates directly and sometimes charge more miles for the same flights.
If your goal is specifically to fly Emirates, booking through Skywards is usually the most reliable path. And now, Bilt is the cheapest way to get there.
